When Mabel Morvillo invited me to be part of a CIDCLI project in Mexico, the idea was to retell a classic children’s story to today’s children. I chose The Brave Little Tailor without thinking too much about it because
I remembered that, as a child, it was one of my favorite stories. Suddenly, the disappointment: reading that story again, I realized (pun intended) that it was not as I remembered it. Or more clearly: it was, but now it seemed terrible to me. What to do? There was no way to retell that story being faithful to history, but, at the same time, transmitting values, feelings and sensations suitable for today’s children.
I tried, but I couldn’t. What came out was something else, another story that recounts -in the form of a father/son dialogue- the sensation that my own encounter with the little tailor provoked in me… brave? No way! Today, when there is so much talk about the loss of values, I hope that my story makes us understand that it is good that many of those old (and not so noble) values are being lost and that, with the children and young people of today, we are building a better humanity.
